Once you decide to throw in your lot with Basset Hounds, you have to make a difficult choice of the breeder. We often judge a person by a place one lives in. The same is with breeders. Sometimes a single look at the kennel can say more about the breeder than a hundred questions about how he raises his dogs.

It goes without saying that the kennel should be clean. Bad smell or dirty dishes do not characterize a breeder as a responsible one. Bassets should always have access to fresh water. Have a look at the puppies. Bright eyes, clean coat, and liveliness suggest that they are quite healthy.
However, the first impression about the kennel should not stop you from examining special papers. Little Bassets do need vaccinations for maternal antibodies cannot serve as continued protection for them. Pedigrees of Basset Hounds should also be looked through.
A responsible breeder cares to find the most suitable homes for his purebred puppies. If he sees that you are not ready to commit yourself to the Basset Hound puppy, he is unlikely to sell you the pup. A responsible breeder is not purely profit-aimed. He is aimed at the improvement of the Basset Hound breed. Therefore, only healthy and temperamentally sound Basset Hounds that will make excellent representatives of the breed are used in their wise breeding program.
