Basset Hounds Puppies - Origins

Basset Hounds are known to have descended from the old St. Hubert hounds. The dogs of this breed were meant to trial and drive game away. The Basset's long ears, the dewlap and wrinkles about the face and head help the dog hold the scent when hunting. Basset Hounds came from Belgium and France. This breed was used in continental Europe for trailing deer, hare and rabbits. Lord Galway introduced Basset Hounds to Great Britain in 1866. British breeders added the Bloodhound strain to the French Basset Hounds. British Basset Hounds differed in conformation, having a longer head, shorter ears and longer legs.

The Basset Hound Club was organized in 1883. The same year, the British Kennel Club recognized the breed. The AKC recognized Basset Hounds in 1885. These dogs are popular pets and are sometimes used as hunting dogs.

Generally speaking, Basset Hounds make wonderful family pets. Versatile and intelligent, affectionate and friendly, they love each member of their family equally. Bassets are very good with kids. They are low maintenance dogs and claim excellent health.

However, Basset Hounds are sometimes called stubborn. They have a mind of their own and tend to display their inclination to do as they feel like doing. Basset Hounds will alarm you with their loud barks if the strangers are around. They are equally happy indoors and outdoors. Basset Hounds get along well with other animals in the house.
